In January of 2020, Uber and partner Hyundai unveiled their air taxi concept in a multi-rotor electric vertical take off and landing craft, but now dozens of companies are investing billions of dollars to make that future a reality.
The stakes have only gotten higher with companies like Japan’s Sky Drive Inc with a massive investment from Toyota, have tested a manned flight and South Korea performing a test of their air taxi concept over the skies of Seoul with bags of rice on board.
With early applications requiring an onboard pilot, prices will be an issue. If the price of a ride is too high, it’s possible that the adoption rate won’t be high enough to make this anything other than a luxury option for the rich. If those obstacles can be overcome, however, the air taxi industry could be worth as much as $1.5 trillion by 2040, and Uber is making as many partners as it can to be at the forefront of this new frontier.
