Top 12 Dark Seinfeld Cast Secrets That Are Pretty Shocking!
In November of 1988, two comedians, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David walked into a deli and came out with the idea of ‘a show about nothing.’ Back then, Seinfeld was already popular — his observational humor had made him a regular at several popular talk shows. Larry, on the other hand, was still exploring the world of comedy. However, Larry’s humor was very different from Seinfeld’s, which made the duo the perfect pair to work on a comedy show.
Convinced that a sitcom was the next best thing to do in his career, Seinfeld pitched the idea of a sitcom to NBC and the network decided to give him a chance. Seinfeld recruited David, primarily because David was the only comedian he knew who had written a screenplay. The two decided to do a show that mocked anything and everything.
Together, they wrote and shot the pilot titled The Seinfeld Chronicles, in which Seinfeld played himself, a successful comedian living in New York. Though the character of George Costanza was based on Larry David, Larry decided he wanted to focus on writing. Therefore, the team selected Jason Alexander to play the part. Jerry and Larry based Kramer’s character on Kenny Kramer, Seinfeld’s eccentric neighbor. The role was given to Michael Richards.
NBC decided to do a test run. The audience hated the pilot with the senior network executives calling the show ‘ too New York and too Jewish.’ Thus, NBC decided to do a single season with just four episodes. Both Larry and Seinfeld were relieved because they only had four episodes worth of material. However, much to their surprise, the show got picked for a second season.
Though the acting was flawless, Seinfeld’s biggest strengths were its unique plots and unparalleled writing. The show became a cultural phenomenon and inspired many future comedy shows, including The Office, Modern Family, and Parks and Recreations. In hindsight, Seinfeld wasn’t just a sitcom. It was an ideological victory for people who fought for creative freedom as well as the independence to do things never done before.
